holiday Card printing Workshop

Class Time: 1:15-4:15pm
Date: Saturday 12/7
Join us for an afternoon of printmaking! In this 3 hour workshop we will be creating our own holiday cards using Gelli Print techniques. We'll walk beginners through the basic process and techniques of Gelli printing, and those with more experience will have space to work with whatever level of guidance they need! Workshop participants will each take home several cards. Gather some friends to join you, or just come make new ones!

holiday paper stars Workshop

Class Time: 6:45-8:45pm
Date: Wednesday 12/11
Join us for an evening of crafting! Learn how to make festive over-sized paper stars and snowflakes using just paper bags! Each participant will leave with 2 or more paper stars of various sizes and colors. These decorative stars can be hung from a ceiling, a window or wall. It's the type of decor that can be kept and enjoyed every winter season.

Date: TWO Consecutive Thursdays: 1/9 and 1/16
In this two session workshop, we will begin with playful collage and drawing exercises that consider shape, contrast, and balance using several different materials to map out our ideas. Following the first session of improvisation, we will translate these drafts into paintings using acrylics. Our goal will be to approach painting through many iterations instead of one final product.

needle felting Workshop

Date: Saturday 1/11
Needle felting is an accessible and forgiving art form that invites play and improvisation. The essential medium - wool "batting" - looks and feels like weightless fluff, but it can be sculpted into surprisingly sturdy objects that have a unique, lively energy. Artists and crafters use needle-felting to make realistic animals, toys and miniatures, holiday decorations, felt "paintings" and more!
In this workshop designed for beginners, you'll spend the afternoon learning how to construct a simple 3-dimensional shape (inspired by an object of your choice), learning basic techniques and getting comfortable managing the materials along the way. After a short break to rest your fingers, you'll learn to decorate the outside of your shape and give it a professional finish - using only wool and needles.

In this class we will exercise the connection between our hands and our eyes, through still life drawing. Class Time: 3:00-5:00pm
Date: Saturday 1/25
In this workshop we will make our own short animations by hand. Animation is all about movement - big and small - from the sway of a blade of grass to a meteor hurtling through space. In this class we will discover the magic of placing a few drawings side by side - to bring things to life, to find movement and change everywhere we look. We will be drawing on paper, and will be capturing our animations using a camera and downshooter. By the end of class we will have a short animation and the skills to make and capture an animation using your phone or other camera at home. Drawers of all levels welcome!
If you have a smartphone please bring it. If not we will have all that you need!

Join us for an evening of drawing from a live model! In this class we will find life and movement in our sketches, we will build a dimensional figure on our page, and will explore the possibilities of charcoal. From beginner to experienced drawers, all are welcome to join as we observe and draw the human figure.

In this one evening workshop we will draw faces from observation. We will practice a few ways of using our pencils to find big shapes, specific features, textures and proportions, and will take on the task of close observation, from skull to skin. Drawers of all levels welcome!

Paint the still-life using acrylic paint! Working directly from arranged objects, you'll learn how to compose and paint your own compelling still life by recognizing and translating values, simplifying detail and shapes, color mixing with a limited palette and applying paint to achieve desired effects! Start from the beginning if you're new to painting, or hone your skills in a new creative community if you're a more experienced artist - all levels welcome!
This 6 session class is also appropriate for those of you who have taken acrylics with us before, as you will be able to build on what you have already learned!

Each week we will investigate some different reasons and ways to draw, and will come to see drawing as a tool with so many incredible functions. We can draw to record our lives, to collaborate with others, to see what images live in our visual memories. We can draw to slow down and observe, to practice quickness and recklessness, to notice change over time, and to chill out. This class is for people of any experience level who are excited to draw.

This 6 session class is designed with a looser structure, to feel a little bit more like an open studio. It is ideal for those who have either taken previous watercolor classes at the Art Annex or have their own prior experience and want to delve deeper into their watercolor journey. Prompts will be provided if requested, or participants may use these sessions to work on self-generated projects with as much support and guidance as requested. We will provide still life set up objects and offer setup coaching for those who would like it.
All materials will be provided, but if you have your own favorite materials, you are welcome to bring those along!

Drawing is an essential part of moving one's art practice forward. Having a sketchbook allows you to draw at any time, wherever you are. In this 6 session class we will use a variety of materials such as a micron pen, a Kurateke pen (brush pen) and watercolor to explore a variety of ways of drawing. Students will also work within a sketchbook and learn the tools needed to develop a sketchbook practice. Come spend your lunch break with Susan as she shares her approach and invites you into this way of working.

exploring the figure in the landscape

Using photographs that you’ve chosen for reference, we will explore different ways of interpreting and designing the figure within a setting or landscape. Through exploration, we will find ways to design the human form within a setting, through value, color, line and shape. For some that might mean interpreting a certain gesture in the photograph; for others—simplifying or even abstracting from the photograph. Ultimately we will build figurative paintings that stand uniquely on their own. Each week we will use a different media (graphite, ink, collage, paint).
This 6 week class is also appropriate for those of you who have taken acrylics with us before, as you will be able to build on what you have already learned!

Do you offer Drop In Classes?We do! We offer drop in options for any of our Early Childhood classes that are not full. Drop In registration opens the first day of the semester. Simply click here or on the "Drop In Class" button beside the class you are interested in to register. The class fee includes one adult and one child. You can register for as many drop in classes as you like, there is no limit. We cannot accommodate refunds or credits for missed drop-in classes at this time. Advanced registration for drop in classes is required, we cannot accommodate drop-ins at the door/at the time of class.

What if my child misses a class?We are not able to offer refunds for missed classes unless we cancel a class. Each enrolled family can schedule 2 makeup classes per semester. If you enroll in a class, you'll be given instructions for how to arrange a makeup, should you miss a class. Makeups are permitted as space allows and are on a first come, first served basis. Makeups must be scheduled for the same semester in which you are enrolled. They do not carry over to future semesters. Drop-in classes are not eligible for makeups, credit, or refunds.

Does a grownup have to attend classes with my child?For our Early Childhood Classes (ages 1.5-4) we do ask that a grownup stay with your child for the duration of class. Our teachers lead each session, but having the child's grownup stay not only helps the child feel comfortable, but also offers adults tools and techniques for continuing art experiences at home.

What is your cancellation policy?We understand that sometimes things come up that make it no longer possible for your child to attend class with us. But we ask that you also understand that late cancellations mean we are unlikely to be able to fill the space in the class, but have already made arrangements for staff and materials. We cannot accommodate refunds or credits for missed drop-in classes at this time. You have two options for cancellation of semester-long classes: Option 1: More than 4 weeks prior to the first class? You can receive credit for the full class minus a $75 cancellation fee. Less than 4 weeks prior to the first class but more than 1 week? You can receive 50% credit for the class minus a $75 cancellation fee. Cancellations made less than one week prior to the start of class are not eligible for credit. Option 2: If it's more than one week prior to the start of class and we are able to fill your spot from the waitlist (if there is one), we will refund you the cost of the class minus a $75 cancellation fee. We cannot give refunds less than one week prior to the start of class. Please note that we only offer full (100%) refunds for a class if WE cancel the class. We are also unable to offer refunds for days or classes missed due to illness or travel. Even if it's COVID. Two makeup classes per semester are available for all of our Early Childhood classes. Drop-in classes are not eligible for credit or refunds.

How do the semesters work?With the goal of creating classes that are at different price points and therefore accessible to more families, we split the weekday semester into two parts: Semester A and Semester B. You can register for just one, or both (now for a discount!). In response to feedback provided by families, we running our Saturday classes as one longer semester. We welcome your feedback on the topic!

Can I bring my child's sibling if they are outside the age group?Possibly! We want to work with families to create a meaningful art experience for everyone attending our classes. So if you would like to bring a child's sibling who is outside the age group listed in the description, please just email us: info@theartannexbrooklyn.com. If they are within the age group, please just sign them up for a drop in that day.
