After getting suggestions from our current Monday students about what the spring class should entail, we've woven together as many of their suggestions as possible to design a class focused on creating observed and imagined landscapes in a multitude of media. We'll do some woodworking, we'll build dioramas, we'll draw and paint on canvas. These landscapes might include animals! Specifically "snails!" And, they may also explore "history's greatest moments." Apologies, but we just couldn't work the two votes for "bacon" into this theme. Perhaps next fall ;)
We'll use the materials as our starting point, and also look to the work of artists like Maya Lin, Andy Goldsworthy and Alma Woodsey Thomas as we create.

In this class we will dip our toes into the rich world of folk art as we delve into traditions from around the world and develop some techniques of our own. We’ll take a look at American quilts, Mexican tin ornaments and coconut masks, Japanese kokeshi dolls, and Norwegian rosemaling painting. We will try our hand at creating a utilitarian piece by making pinch pots, we’ll sculpt with cardboard and pieces of wood to create mini furniture, and we will paint familiar scenes and local landscapes that are dear to us. As we discover how different folk art traditions emerged and what they tell us about the people that created them, we’ll discover the things that are important to us and how we can preserve our way of living through art.

Spring in New York City is a wonderful thing. Magnolias and cherry blossoms bloom, bulbs emerge from the ground, tulips of all colors pop up on planters. Everyone in the city sighs in relief when the first warm day comes and people flock to the parks. Inspired by spring, this class will create art about flowering, blooming, and growing. We will do printmaking and cyanotypes with leaves, craft paper flowers and garlands, and keep a semester-long log of our favorite spring developments. Drawing, painting, and sculpting—join us as we spring toward summer!
